Downstairs Bath Rehab

The downstairs bath was (and is) a tiny space carved out of what once once (we think) the dining room. The rounded tub and other fixtures looked to be 1920’s. The tub sat over an uninsulated floor and water would freeze in it in the winter. The toilet was crammed into the corner in such a way that when you sat on it you were in danger of banging your head on the sink. Altogether unsatisfactory. Once again, this was Judy’s project from start to finish.

The tiny room measures just 4′ by 7′.

The plan was to remove the tub and the tiles, rotate the toilet 90 degrees, and paper the walls.

The first step was to remove the subway tiles and open up the wall to expose the tub’s plumbing. Funny how these projects always involve a pile of debris and bare studs.

Chris got behind the tub and and pulled out the plumbing, then the tub was hauled out (no easy task in that small space). That left a nasty mess in the floor where the tub had been: some of the subfloor was missing. In the center picture you can see the brick foundation and part of the sill that was replaced when we were working on the West wall (West Wall – 2016)

To add acoustic isolation, Judy exposed the interior walls and added insulation, and patched up the sub-floor.

Finally, put up drywall. The room is starting to come together.

We came by a batch of nice flooring, Judy rebuilt the plumbing chase and made a new surround for the baseboard heating.

Some nice wallpaper, a piece of furniture, a painting on the wall, et voila. Nothin’ to it.
