By the winter of 2018-2019 I was getting pretty tired of working in an unheated shop even though, since it was in a basement, the temperature was somewhat moderated. I settled on a 50MBTU fan-driven hot water heater. The trick was how to get it hooked up.

There was a circulator available, it was even labeled “Basement”, but there was nothing attached to it. Locating the pipes wasn’t hard, I soldered PEX couplings to them and ran 3/4″ lines out to the workshop and hung the unit in the space between the workshop and the inner basement.
Getting the controls hooked up was a bit more challenging. With a bit of judicious snooping I located the control board. You can see for each zone, the connection for the thermostat at the top and the 110-volt connection at the bottom to power the circulator pump.

My solution was to add an extra connection to supply power to the (very low-power) fan, run that to a junction box above the boiler and from there to the fan on the heating unit.
