Design Challenges: the Wall

The Great Wall

The “Outback” addition presented a large windowless wall at the end of the driveway. It’s out of scale with the rest of the building, and needed to be visually integrated into the rest of the Victorian structure. It’s also a North wall, which argues against large window spaces.

There were a couple of vague ideas, none very satisfactory

The solution was a wrap-around porch to visually pull the mass into the main structure. To further unite it, the dentil-and-bracket decorative pattern of the main house was echoed, slightly reduced in size.
