Side Porch Area

We decided the house really needed a covered side porch (see Design Challenges: the Wall). Work began in 2012

This is what we started with. We’d thought to start in late summer…

…but just like on those reality shows, there’s the ‘bad news” moment. Water pouring down from a roof valley on to a flat deck had resulted in considerable water damage. This had to be repaired before anything else.

Once the damage was repaired, the planned work could begin. First step was to put in new precast concrete support pilings.

Under the porch there was a massive granite block that we think was once a property marker. We’ve found two of these on the property.

Then a new support beam was placed under the existing deck

And the new decking was built to turn the corner.

The framing went up

And the roof deck went on by the end of October.

The fascia and soffit went on, the roof deck was covered with housewrap, and it sat for the winter.
