West wall – First Repairs

First Repairs

When we bought the house, the back part of the West wall had no sheathing and the roof had not been finished. This was corrected before we moved in.

In this photo, the building had been closed in and wrapped in housewrap. A previous owner had remodeled the kitchen, but had not put sheathing or siding under the window (#1), so that was put on and primed (white paint).

As part of the Laundry Room renovation, the second-floor window was replaced (#2).

The entablatures (#3) were deteriorated enough that birds were nesting in them. We started by taking them off the wall, both first and second floors.

We were using wooden pump jacks at the time.

Note the lesser gables have single brackets instead of doubles (see Architectural Details)

Inevitably, some surrounding clapboards get removed.

The broken pieces went to the workshop

Nice new ones were created, see Building an Entablature

and the new work installed.

Work on this section paused while we did other things. Work on the West wall resumed in 2016
