Here’s an exploded diagram of an Entablature, showing its various pieces:
To build this, start with the brackets: mine were 5 5/8″ x 11 1/2″ x2″. Trace a pattern onto the stock and cut on the bandsaw. Make 2.
The Frieze board is a piece of 1x, in this case 8″x41.75″The bed mould over the Frieze is 1 5/8 wide, the plates over the brackets are 1″ wider than the brackets. The visible edges are routed with a 3/4″ round-over. Note the pieces are relieved to mate with each other. The soffitt goes on next, it’s about 6 3/4 x 56 inches, and extends 4″ or so on either side. You can add the dentils now.The Cornice is basically an open box that fits down over the Soffit. It’s 8″ deep, 56.75″ wide (in this case), and 3 5/8 to 3 3/4″ high
The front is 1/8″ lower than the rear to allow water to run off. This means a compound mitre for the moulding.
The back is raised 1″ and stop blocks on the inside allow it to sit down over the soffit
Set the Cornice over the Soffit, put the top (9 1/4″ x 5′) in place, and you’re done.
