All of the windows that have been added to the house have been replacement windows. Unlike New construction windows, replacement windows have no fins on the outside to attach to the building, and they require a framed opening. There are conflicting opinions as to which are better; I chose these because a deal came my way and I grabbed it.
An important criterion for us was that anything we did should look like it belonged there, that it harmonized well with a mid-19th-century house. Windows should have sills and generous exterior trim. Where appropriate, they should have some protection above, either an entablature or some other protection from rain and wind.
